Getting the size right

Size guide

Four things, four ways to measure. Each takes a minute with a ruler and a strip of paper. If a chart here disagrees with a ring you already own and love, trust the ring.

Rings

A ring size is just the inside width of the ring, in millimetres. Two ways to find it - use whichever you have to hand.

16.5 mm INNER DIAMETER PAPER STRIP
Measure the inside, not the outside
  1. 1
Have a ring that fits that finger?

Lay it on a ruler and read the width of the hole, edge to edge, in millimetres. Find that number in the table. Done.

  2. 2
No ring? Use a strip of paper.

Cut a strip about 5 mm wide, wrap it round the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimetres. That is the circumference - the second column.

  3. 3
Check it twice, in the evening.

Fingers are bigger late in the day and in warm weather. If the mark falls between two sizes, take the larger one - a loose ring is easy to make smaller; a tight one is not.

Each ORIVA size is 0.4 mm wider than the one before. A band wider than 6 mm feels tighter - go up half a size to a full size on wide bands.

Still not sure? Most rings can be resized once, free, within the first year. Full eternity bands are the exception - the stones run all the way round, so the product page says so before you buy.

Bangles

A closed bangle has to pass over your hand, so the measurement that matters is your hand, not your wrist. This is where most size charts go wrong.

MEASUREHERE THUMB TUCKED IN
Around the knuckles, thumb in
  1. 1
Tuck your thumb into your palm

Exactly as you would to slide a bangle on. Keep the hand relaxed, not squeezed.

  2. 2
    Measure around the widest part

Wrap a tape or a strip of paper around the knuckles and the folded thumb, snug but not tight. Read the length in centimetres.

  3. 3
Find that number in the table

If it falls between two sizes, take the larger. A bangle that will not pass the hand cannot be worn at all; one a little loose can.

19 - 19.5 cm2.863.5 mm2½ in
20 - 20.5 cm2.1066.7 mm2⅝ in

Bangle sizes are in the Indian ana system: 2.6 means two inches and six sixteenths. Most adult women are 2.4 or 2.6. If you can only guess, guess 2.6.

Openable bangles are different. A hinged or screw-open bangle does not have to clear the hand, so it is sized from the wrist like a bracelet - for a 16 cm wrist that is size 2.0. The product page says which kind it is.

Bracelets

A bracelet wraps the wrist, so here you do measure the wrist - then add a little room to move.

MEASURE HERE WRIST BONE
Just below the wrist bone
  1. 1
    Measure the wrist

Wrap a tape or paper strip just below the wrist bone, snug but not tight. Read it in centimetres.

  2. 2
    Add room to move

Add 1.5 to 2 cm for a bracelet that sits comfortably and moves a little. Add about 1 cm for a tennis bracelet, which is meant to sit closer.

  3. 3
    Pick the length

That total is the bracelet length. Most ORIVA bracelets are made at 17.8 cm (7 inches). Need another length? Tell us at checkout and we make it to your measurement at no extra cost.

For a tennis bracelet take the length one step shorter than the table gives - it is meant to sit close to the wrist.

Necklaces

A necklace length is the full length of the chain, opened out. What matters is where it will sit on you.

Where each length sits
  1. 1
Decide where you want it to sit

At the base of the throat, at the collarbone, at the top of the neckline, or lower over clothing. The drawing shows the four usual lengths.

  2. 2
Check with a piece of string

Cut string to the length you are considering, hold it round your neck and look in a mirror. Thirty seconds, and more reliable than any chart.

  3. 3
    Layering two or more

Leave at least 5 cm between chains so they hang separately. 40, 45 and 50 layer well together.
